Math Tutoring on Solving Quadratic Equations Using the Square Root Property
The Square Root Property is one method that is used to find the solutions to a quadratic (second degree) equation. This method involves taking the square roots of both sides of the equation. Before taking the square root of each side, you must isolate the term that contains the squared variable.
If c is a positive number and if x² = c, then x = √c or x = −√c. (This can be written as one answer as ±√c.) In other words, when solving a quadratic equation by the square root property, we want both the positive and negative square roots. Extracting roots involves isolating the square and then applying the square root property. After applying the square root property, you have two linear equations that each can be solved. To find the needed value for the perfect square trinomial, take half of the coefficient of the middle term (x-term), square it, and add that value to both sides of the equation. Take the square root of each side and solve. Remember to consider both plus and minus results.
