__Math Tutoring on Solving Quadratic Equations Using the Square Root Property__

The **Square Root Property** is one method that is used to find the solutions to a **quadratic (second degree) equation.** This method involves taking the **square roots** of both sides of the equation. Before taking the **square root** of each side, you must isolate the term that contains the squared variable.

If **c** is a positive number and if **x² = c, then x = √c or x = −√c.** **(**This can be written as one answer as **±√c.)** In other words, when solving a **quadratic equation** by the **square root property**, we want both the **positive **and** negative square roots**. **Extracting roots** involves isolating the **square** and then applying the **square root property. **After applying the **square root property,** you have two linear equations that each can be solved. To find the needed value for the **perfect square trinomial**, take half of the coefficient of the middle term (**x**-term), square it, and add that value to both sides of the equation. Take the **square root** of each side and solve. Remember to consider both **plus **and** minus** results.
