Math Tutoring on Solving Linear Inequalities in One Variable
An Algebraic Inequality is a mathematical sentence connecting an expression to a value, variable, or another expression with an inequality sign. In words and as mathematical symbols inequalities are expressed as, less than ( < ), less than or equal ( ≤ ), greater than ( > ) greater than or equal ( ≥ ), not equal (≠ ).
Steps look almost the same as solving linear equation in one variable, except there's a big difference in one step. When we multiply or divide both sides to isolate the variable; we need to be very careful. If we multiply or divide both sides of any inequality by a negative number, we must reverse the inequality symbol or inequality sign.
Any value that makes an inequality true is called a solution. Solution to linear inequalities can be expressed in several ways: using inequalities, using a graph or using interval notation. To solve graphically we need to graph the left side as y1, right side as y2 and then find the point of intersection. Based upon the inequality, the solution is determined.
