To graph or plot points we use two perpendicular number lines called Axes. The Horizontal number line is called the x-axis, and we have the positive x values on the right and the negative x values on the left. The Vertical number line is called the y-axis, and the positive y values above the x-axis and the negative y values are below the x-axis. The point at which the axes cross is called the Origin, and every point on the coordinate plane is identified by what's called an Ordered Pair.

Following are the steps outlined here for graphing linear equations by plotting points.

Step one:  we choose two or more values for the input variable, normally x, and list them in a table of values.
We only need two points to
graph a line, but the third point will serve as a check, so we'll always select three values for the input variable x. In general, it's always good to select zero, as well as a negative value, and a positive value.
Step two: we substitute each input value, or x value, into the equation, and compute the corresponding output values, or corresponding y values. Then, we list these values in the table.
Step three: write each input-output pair on the table as an ordered pair, the input-output pair is the x, y pair.
Step four: we plot the ordered pairs, connect them, and then extend the line beyond the points to show that the pattern continues.
