**Decimal Notation** is used to write numbers according to **Place** **Value** in **Base-10**. A **Decimal Point** is used to separate whole numbers from numbers less than ‘1’. For example:

*The runner finished in 10.3 seconds *or* The Dow was up 124.6 points today etc.*

Procedure to **Rounding Numbers** in **Decimal Notation**:

1. Identify the round-off value.

2. If the digit to the right of the round-off place value is less than 5, do not change the round-off place digit.

3. If the digit to the right of the round-off place value is 5 or more, increase the round-off place digit by 1.

4. In either case, drop all digits to the right of the round-off place value.

By rounding we determine what number a given number is closer to.
