Subtracting whole numbers is the opposite of adding whole numbers. The **Minuend** is the starting number or the number in which another number is being subtracted. The **Subtrahend** is the number being subtracted. The result of the subtraction is called the **Difference**.

1. Write the difference in vertical form and line up corresponding place values.

2. Subtract by starting with one’s column. If the column does not have a large enough number to subtract, borrow from the column on the left.
