Whole numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, ….

The numbers being added are called the Addends. The answer is called Sum. One key to Adding Whole Numbers is Knowing Place Value.

The Process of Adding Whole Numbers:

1.    Write the sum in vertical form and line up corresponding Place Values.

2.    Add starting with one’s column. Carry if the sum of any column is a two digit number.

Subtracting Whole Numbers:

Subtracting whole numbers is the opposite of adding whole numbers. The Minuend is the starting number or the number in which another number is being subtracted. The Subtrahend is the number being subtracted. The result of the subtraction is called the Difference.

The Process of Subtracting Whole Numbers:

1.    Write the difference in vertical form and line up corresponding place values.

2.    Subtract by starting with one’s column. If the column does not have a large enough number to subtract, borrow from the column on the left.
